Our Approach to Reading and Writing
At I Can Academy, we help students become confident, fluent readers and expressive writers by aligning with research-based practices and California’s English Language Arts adoption. Our program builds skills step by step—from phonemic awareness and decoding to comprehension and fluency, ensuring that every child has the tools to understand and enjoy what they read.
In writing, students move from inventive spelling and short stories to mastering narrative, expository, and opinion genres. They learn to use sound spelling patterns, build vocabulary, and practice both quick writes and extended compositions.
Across reading and writing, our focus is on:
Strong foundations (letter sounds, word patterns, and fluency).
Deep comprehension (understanding, analyzing, and connecting texts).
Expressive communication (writing clearly, creatively, and with purpose).
